About the work
This art piece is made from 2 found elements. First of all a found
object, a discarded floppy disc, and secondly a found digital file with directions
(sourced from the internet) for building a 'Starship Enterprise' model from
the interior of the floppy disc. This piece is an attempt to make a model for
how we might source and reuse objects and ideas seen as past their time, to
produce new alternatives from apparent obsolescence, and to get art from old
rope!
The Enterprise model was also the basis for one of the 1st posts I made to
my weblog www.niallflaherty.com which was set up as an experiment into artists'
use of current technologies to publish and distribute their own work. This
is a project that I have continued with Blackletter, an online artists' collaborative
